Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team with a game-high five points as the Seahawks posted a come-from-behind 13-11 non-conference victory over the visiting Muhlenberg College Mules Saturday afternoon.
Mull netted two goals, including his second man-up tally of the season, and dished three assists while junior midfielder Taylor Cook (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) recorded his first career hat trick, including scoring the eventual game-winning goal with six seconds left in the third period.
Muhlenberg (2-4) jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first period as the Mules scored the first two goals of the game within a 38-second span. Cook cut the lead to one at 6:55 with an unassisted goal but Muhlenberg regained a two-goal cushion 41 seconds later. Mull cut the lead to one once again with his first goal of the day at 4:13. The Mules headed into the second quarter with their two-goal lead as senior midfielder Alex Ardolino (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) found the back of the net for his second goal.
St. Mary's (2-2) outscored the Mules, 5-3, in the second stanza as the Seahawks netted four extra-man goals. Senior attacker J.P. Lennon (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored twice in quarter while Mull had a goal and three assists. Senior long-stick midfielder Peter Windsor (Towson, Md./St. Paul's School) sent his team into halftime tied 7-7 with Muhlenberg as he picked up his second goal of the season with 59 second remaining in the first half.
The Seahawks had another five-goal outing in the third period as Cook struck twice and senior attackman John Dehm (Trumbull, Conn./Middlesex School [Mass.]) handed out two helpers to send St. Mary's headed into the final quarter with a 12-9 advantage.
Neither team scored in the fourth stanza until the 6:41-minute mark when first-year midfielder Jon Thomas (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) fired one past Seahawk senior goalie Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) to close the gap to 12-10. First-year midfielder Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton School) responded for St. Mary's with his fifth tally of the year and the team's final score of the game at 5:51.
After the Seahawks started 4-of-16 at face-off X, junior midfielder Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) turned it around for St. Mary's in the second half with a 8-for-12 effort while contributing a team-best nine ground balls and one goal.
Wheeler made 16 saves, including nine in the second half, while adding three ground balls. Besides his game-tying goal, Windsor added four caused turnovers and four loose ball pickups. Muhlenberg outshot St. Mary's, 39-30, but the Seahawks edged the visitors, 29-26, in ground balls.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, March 14 when the Seahawks take on No. 12 Denison University (4-0) in non-conference action at The Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia. Game time is noon.
