Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. - St. Mary's College of Maryland (8-4, 3-2 CAC) baseball team erupted for fifteen runs in the opening game of this afternoon's Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against York College of Pennsylvania (4-5, 1-1 CAC) to earn a 15-3 victory. The Spartans took the second game, 4-3.
The Seahawks after falling behind 1-0 through the first inning of play responded with five consecutive runs of the course of the second and third innings to claim a 5-1 lead. St. Mary's put the first three runners aboard in the bottom of the second, as sophomore Alex Lenovitz (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall College) walked to start off the inning, first-year Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) was next hit by a pitch, followed by an infield single by senior Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown), loading the bases for junior Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate). Muscatelli delivered with single up the middle to score Lenovitz and Nadolny for a 2-1 lead.
The third inning started off very similar to the second inning for the Seahawks with two consecutive singles by junior Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken)and senior Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills). A few Spartan miscues in the field allowed St. Mary's to load the bases, and then clear the bases on an Urso 3 RBI single, putting them ahead 5-1 through three innings of play.
York got two runs back in the fourth inning to pull within two at 5-3, but the Seahawks in search of insurance runs put a seven spot on the board in the fifth inning to break open the game. Muscatelli delivered with another multi-RBI hit, a double down the left field line to put St. Mary's ahead 7-3. First-year Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin), senior John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis), Napier, and Nadolny all picked up RBIs in the inning, as the Seahawks entered the sixth with a 12-3 advantage. St. Mary's tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final, 15-3.
Senior Michael Victory (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) earned the complete game win in game one, scattering 11 hits, while giving up only three runs, striking out four on the afternoon. Victory is now 3-0 on the season.
In the nightcap York jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the third inning to grab command. However, St. Mary's answered with two runs in the third to pull within a run at 3-2. The Spartans would quickly respond with an insurance run in the top of the fourth to create a little separation at 4-2.
Both teams would utilize solid pitching and defense to hold each other scoreless through the sixth inning. St. Mary's down to their last half inning looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh down two runs, however, York closer Brandon Ullam would make quick work of the Seahawks opening two hitters, as both went down swinging on strikes.
Down to their last out, St. Mary's Napier would single deep into the left side of the infield to give St. Mary's its first runner; a wild pitch by Ullam would allow Napier to advance into scoring position. Johnson would deliver on the next pitch with a double to left field, scoring Napier and bringing St. Mary's within one run of forcing extras. However, the Seahawk rally would soon end, as the next hitter would ground out to short for the final out of the game.
Junior Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) suffered the loss in game two, going six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits. Sophomore Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) pitched one perfect inning in relief.
Napier led the Seahawks on the day with a 4-7 effort, including three RBI and two runs scored. Muscatelli finished 2-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.
St. Mary's and York will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon; first pitch is slated for noon.
