Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior starter Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) guided the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team to a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader split with the Wesley College Wolverines Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks (12-5, 5-3 CAC) posted a 2-0 shutout of Wesley in the first half of the twin-bill while the Wolverines (11-4, 2-3 CAC) claimed a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
Jerrard improved to 3-2 on the season as the right-hander hurled his first complete game of the season, scattering six hits over seven scoreless innings and walking just two Wesley batters.
Both teams put up goose eggs through four-and-a-half innings before St. Mary's struck in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and sent a single to leftfield, allowing runners to each advance a base before senior Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) came home on the Wesley leftfielder's fielding error. A fly out to leftfield and a fielder's choice to third base helped the Wolverines get out of the inning down just 1-0.
The Seahawks tacked on their second run in sixth as senior Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) tripled to right centerfield to lead off the inning. After a groundout, first-year Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) popped up to second base to bring home Johnson on the sacrifice fly.
Jerrard got the first two Wesley batters in the top of the seventh to ground out before giving up a single to left center and walking the next batter to have runners on first and second. Jerrard held the rally in check as he got the fifth batter of the inning to ground out to second base to preserve the 2-0 win.
Five different Seahawks connected on hits in the win while Nadolny had an RBI and Johnson and Urso each scored runs. The Seahawk win was the first pitching loss for senior RHP DJ Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston) as Keckler fell to 4-1 on the season.
Wesley scored in pairs three times in the nightcap to tally the 6-1 victory, picking up two runs in the first, third and sixth innings. Junior LHP Jordan Lozzi (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) pitched a complete game to move to 4-1 on the season, yielding just one run on four hits while striking out five Seahawks and walking three.
St. Mary's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning as sophomore Alex Lenovitz (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall) doubled down the right field line to bring home junior Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), who got on base with a lead-off walk. Nadolny then drew a walk to load the bases but Lozzi got out of the jam with back-to-back ground outs.
Lenovitz paced the Seahawks at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort while junior LHP Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
St. Mary's and Wesley will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at 1:00 pm in the Hawk's Nest.
