Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped its first Capital Athletic Conference series of the season Sunday afternoon as the Wesley College Wolverines doubled up on the Seahawks, 4-2, for a 2-1 edge in the series.
St. Mary's (12-6, 5-4 CAC) staked an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The inning's leadoff hitter, senior Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills), went all the way to second on a Wesley throwing error before going to third on sophomore Alex Lenovitz's (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall) fly out to centerfield.
The Seahawks then loaded the bases as first-year Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) drew a walk and senior Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) was hit by a pitch. Senior Eric Gronbeck (Owings, Md./Northern) sent a high but short pop up to right field to score Johnson. Wesley's sophomore starter Zach Stuart (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) got the next Seahawk batter to strikeout swinging to hold the Seahawks to a 1-0 margin through two innings.
Wesley (12-4, 3-3 CAC) got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, taking a 2-1 lead. The Wolverines started off the inning with back-to-back singles before senior Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) doubled to left field to drive in both runs with one out. St. Mary's senior starter Michael Victory (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) got out of the inning by pitching back-to-back ground outs.
St. Mary's knotted the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning. After a lead-off ground out, Lenovitz tripled to right center and then came home on Nadolny's sacrifice fly to leftfield. A pop up to the shortstop ended the inning.
The Wolverines broke the draw with two more runs in the eighth inning. Kimmel crossed home plate on a single to left center by senior Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) to give Wesley a 3-2 lead. Junior Morgan Rupp (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) notched the second run of the inning on a single to left field by junior Matt Robles (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield).
Sophomore Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) then relieved Victory with one out and bases loaded. Coe ended inning by getting Wesley's leadoff hitter to ground into a double play.
Wesley's sophomore reliever Andrew Cooper (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) picked up his first save of the season by retiring the Seahawk batters in order over the final two innings.
Victory (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he gave up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts. At the plate, five different Seahawks connected on hits.
