Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Washington College (13-1) jumped out to a nine-run lead over the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team (12-7), including four runs in the top of the seventh inning, which the Seahawks could not overcome and fell 13-3 at the Hawk's Nest.
St. Mary's got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning when sophomore Eric Skrzyniarz (Bethesda, Md. Winston Churchill) drove home classmate Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) with a triple deep to right center field. Skrzyniarz would score on the next play off of a ground out to the left side of the infield by first-year Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic).
The two runs in the seventh inning pulled the Seahawks within seven at 9-2; however, the Shoremen responded with four more runs in the eighth to take a commanding 13-2 lead.
Skrzyniarz would cross the plate again in the ninth off a single by first-year Matt Holdefer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) after reaching base on his second single of the afternoon to complete the scoring for the Seahawks.
Junior Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) suffered his first loss of the season, pitching 6.0 IP and giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four. Senior Shane Mattingly (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) picked up the win for the Shoremen, yielding just two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out 10 Seahawk hitters.
First-year Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air), junior Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), and Skrzyniarz highlighted the St. Mary's offense with two hits apiece.
St. Mary's will look to return to the win column on Thursday, March 22 when it takes on Old Westbury in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:30 pm.
