Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year attacker Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) notched a game-high five points on his fourth consecutive hat trick and two assists as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team picked up its fourth straight win with a 12-7 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Hood College Blazers. St. Mary's remains undefeated in conference action with a 3-0 record.
Junior midfielder Taylor Cook (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) tallied a hat trick as well while fellow classmate Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) dished out three assists to bring his season total to 21.
St. Mary's (6-3, 3-0 CAC) rolled out to a 4-0 lead with four minutes remaining in the first period as Tarrant had a goal and an assist in the run. Senior attacker Corey Roberts (Fallston, Md./Fallston) finally put Hood on the scoreboard eight seconds before the final horn for the first period, completing a pass from fellow senior Ricky Orndorff (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne).
The Seahawks held Hood scoreless in the second quarter, scoring four unanswered goals in 15 minutes. Cook found the back of the net twice while Tarrant added a goal and an assist as St. Mary's headed into halftime with an 8-1 advantage.
Roberts and junior Joey O'Hara (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) each scored twice to pace the Hood offense while Orndorff handed out three assists.
St. Mary's scored the first two of the second half, including a man-up goal by senior attacker J.P. Lennon (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's), to post a 10-1 lead at 11:15. The Blazers then tallied the next three scores, including a pair of man-up goals, for a 10-4 margin at 3:58. O'Hara notched both Blazer man-up goals as Orndorff assisted on both plays. The Seahawks closed out the third period with two goals, including one by Tarrant with 19 ticks left, for a 12-4 game.
Hood (2-8, 0-2 CAC) did not allow another St. Mary's goal in the final quarter while the Blazers put three in the net as senior Scott Thompson (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza) contributed a goal and an assist in the run for the 12-7 final.
St. Mary's won 16-of-23 face-offs as junior Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) posted a 10-of-13 effort at face-off X, scooped up four ground balls, and chipped in a goal. Tarrant helped the Seahawks to a 34-26 ground ball margin with six loose ball pickups while junior defenseman Justin Harty (Medford Lakes, N.J./Camden Catholic) led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Three Seahawk goalies combined for nine saves on 27 shots as senior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) improved to 6-3 with six stops in 30 minutes. Three goalies for Hood registered 14 saves on 43 shots as first-year Joseph McCulloh (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made 10 in the loss.
St. Mary's will be back in action next Saturday, March 24 as the Seahawks welcome the University of Mary Washington (6-2, 2-1 CAC) to Seahawk Stadium for Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 pm.
