Box Score 2 Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team suffered a pair of Capital Athletic Conference losses Sunday afternoon as host No. 7 Salisbury University posted 7-1 and 8-7 victories over the Seahawks at the SU Baseball Field.
In the first game, St. Mary's (13-10, 5-6 CAC) mustered only one run on two hits as senior third baseman Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) and first-year DH Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) collected the Seahawk hits. Johnson picked up his ninth double of the season while Nadolny scored the lone run.
Salisbury (17-3, 9-2 CAC) staked a 3-0 lead after the first inning of play before the Seahawks cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second as Nadolny came home on sophomore first baseman Alex Lenovitz's (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall) sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Sea Gulls then added four in the bottom of the fifth for the 7-1 win.
Senior RHP Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) suffered the loss on the mound for St. Mary's, allowing three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings, before being relieved by junior RHP Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills).
The Sea Gulls claimed an 8-1 advantage through six innings of play in the nightcap. However, St. Mary's gave Salisbury a run for its money with a six-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. With bases loaded, first-year right fielder Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) reached base on fielding error by the pitcher to score Johnson. Senior centerfielder John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) then drew a base on balls to walk in senior second baseman Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and maintain bases loaded.
Sophomore pinch hitter Eric Skrzyniarz (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) came home on senior Eric Gronbeck's (Owings, Md./Northern) ground out to second to cut the lead in half, 8-4, with two outs. Nadolny then stepped up to the plate and ripped a two-run double to left center to bring home Dioguardo and Stewart and pull St. Mary's within two. Junior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) drove in the last run of the inning, scoring junior pinch runner Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) with a single to leftfield. Salisbury finally got out of the inning as Johnson hit into a fielder's choice and Napier was tagged out at second.
Napier paced the Seahawks at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort while Gronbeck and Nadolny each finished the nightcap with two RBI each. Junior LHP Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) dropped to 1-4 on the season as Eisenberg gave up five runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
St. Mary's will look to snap its two-game slide on Tuesday, March 27 when they travel back to Salisbury University to wrap up the three-game CAC series with a single, nine-inning game at 3:30 pm.
