St. Mary's Baseball Stumbles at No. 5 Salisbury

Box Score

Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team were unable to steal one from No. 5 Salisbury University as the host Sea Gulls completed the Capital Athletic Conference series sweep of St. Mary's with a 9-1 win Tuesday afternoon at the SU Baseball Field.

Salisbury (18-3, 10-2 CAC) owned a 2-0 lead after three innings of play before the Seahawks cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth inning.

After a leadoff fly out to right field, junior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) drew a walk before first-year RHP Brett Collacchi (Bear, Del./Saint Mark's) struck out the next Seahawk batter.  First-year DH Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) continued his solid hitting with his eighth double of the season to bring home Napier with two outs on the board.  Collacchi got the subsequent batter to fly out to right field to end the inning and St. Mary's rally.

The Sea Gulls responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a two-run lead with two innings remaining.  After holding St. Mary's scoreless in its half of the eighth inning, Salisbury unleashed six runs as senior Chris Connor (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) connected on a two-out, three-run home run to push his team's lead to 9-1.  Sophomore reliever Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) got the following Sea Gull hitter to fly out to right field to get St. Mary's out of the inning.

St. Mary's started the ninth inning on the right foot with back-to-back singles to have runners on first and second.  Sophomore first baseman Alex Lenovitz (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall) then advanced to third on a fly out to centerfield for runners on first and third.  Salisbury junior closer Danny Druzgala (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph's) then pitched another fly out followed by a fielder's choice for the forced out at second to end the game.

Nadolny and senior centerfielder John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) each collected two hits to combine for half of St. Mary's eight hits.

Senior RHP Michael Victory (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) dropped to 4-2 on the season as Victory allowed eight runs (only two earned) on 12 hits while fanning one and walking one in 7.2 innings.

St. Mary's hopes to snap its three-game slide this weekend with three-game CAC series against University of Mary Washington at the Hawk's Nest on Saturday, March 31 at 1:00 pm and Sunday, April 1 at 1:00 pm.  On Saturday, St. Mary's will honor the team's eight seniors for their years of service and commitment to the Seahawk baseball program.
