Seahawk Baseball Splits with Mary Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Mary's City, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland and University of Mary Washington each claimed a win in Saturday's Capital Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader.  Mary Washington took game one by a 5-2 decision before St. Mary's snapped its four-game slide with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

St. Mary's (14-12, 6-8 CAC) staked a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play in the first game as junior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) connected on an RBI double and first-year DH Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) hit an RBI single in back-to-back at-bats.

However, Mary Washington (8-12-1, 3-8 CAC) used 13 hits in the first game, including six extra-base hits, to get back in the win column.  The Eagles scored twice in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 2-2 before taking a two-run lead in the fifth with two more runs.  UMW then added an insurance run in the sixth inning for a three-run cushion.

First-year catcher Jonathan Haught (Spotsylvania, Va./Courtland) paced the Eagles at the plate in the first game with three hits, including his first triple of the season, and one RBI.  On the mound, junior starter Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI) secured the win as Mancari (4-2) fanned 11 Seahawk batters and gave up just two runs on three hits for his third complete game of the season.

Senior RHP Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) suffered the loss for the Seahawks, dropping to 3-4 on the season as Jerrard allowed four runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work with three strikeouts.

The Seahawks regrouped and halted their losing streak at four behind junior LHP Wick Eisenberg's (Towson, Md./Friends School) second complete game of the season as Eisenberg won the pitcher's duel against senior Matt Abramson (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga).  Eisenberg improved to 2-4 on the season as he sat down a season-best five batters and scattered four hits in the 2-1 win.

St. Mary's again forged a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior third baseman Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) ripped a two-out, two RBI single to right field to bring home Napier, who drew a walk in his at-bat, and Nadolny, who struck his ninth double of the season.

The Eagles cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth inning as senior shortstop Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va./Colonial Beach) came home on senior third baseman Santino Rosanova's (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) ground out to second.

It was a quick game after the top of the fourth inning as both pitchers retired the sides in order for the final 18 outs of the contest.

St. Mary's and Mary Washington will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at 1:00 pm in the Hawk's Nest.
