Mary Washington Takes Series from St. Mary's Baseball

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped the rubber match of its Capital Athletic Conference series with the University of Mary Washington Eagles Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks suffered a 5-0 setback.  Mary Washington the series with a 2-1 mark.

St. Mary's (14-13, 6-9 CAC) drew seven walks from the Eagles' junior starter Michael Straub (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) as five different Seahawks combined for only six hits in the loss.  Junior catcher Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) led the home team at the plate with a pair of hits.

Mary Washington (9-12-1, 4-8 CAC) claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning following an RBI double down the leftfield line by sophomore outfielder Keith Yarnell (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge).  The Eagles increased their lead to 3-0 in the third as junior designated hitter Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va./South County) connected on a two-run double to left center.

Solid pitching by senior RHP Michael Victory (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) and a strong defensive front by the Seahawks held Mary Washington scoreless for the next three innings, including retiring the side in order during the fifth and sixth innings.

The Eagles notched a four-run lead in the seventh as sophomore shortstop Jake Rudman (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) singled to left field with two outs to score senior second baseman Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) who had received a base on balls.

Mary Washington's last run came in the ninth when Rudman struck an RBI double down the right field line to bring home first-year outfielder Connor Wells (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), who reached base with a double to left center.

Victory (4-3) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on 11 hits and fanning three Eagle hitters while walking two.

Straub improved to 3-3 on the season as he scattered four hits, walked seven and sat down five in 5.1 innings.  Offensively, Mary Washington was paced by Yarnell's three hits while Sixsmith and Wells each scored two runs.  Rudman and Jordan batted in two runs each.

St. Mary's will up the conference regular-season on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at Frostburg State University (13-12, 5-7 CAC) in Frostburg, Maryland.  The two teams will play a single, nine-inning game on Friday at 3:30 followed by a doubleheader the next day starting at noon.
