Seahawk Baseball Falls to Frostburg State

Box Score

Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped the first contest of its three-game Capital Athletic Conference series with the host Frostburg State University Bobcats Friday afternoon, succumbing to a 16-6 loss to Frostburg State.

St. Mary's (14-14, 6-10 CAC) tallied six runs on nine hits, including three extra-base hits, while committing four errors on the day.  The Seahawks' six runs came in the last three innings of the game.

Frostburg (15-12, 6-7 CAC) notched three runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to stake an 8-0 advantage, heading into the last three innings of play.

Sophomore first baseman Alex Lenovitz (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall) started the scoring for St. Mary's in the top of the seventh inning with his solo shot (with two outs) to right center for the team's first run of the game.  The Seahawks then scored two more runs in the inning capitalizing on an error by FSU's centerfielder, allowing senior second baseman Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and junior catcher Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) to cross home plate and cut the Bobcat lead to 8-3.  The rally ended with a pop up to second.

The Bobcats boasted a 10-run advantage after the seventh inning as Frostburg tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the inning.  St. Mary's responded with two additional runs in the top of the eighth as senior right fielder Eric Gronbeck (Owings, Md./Northern) scored on Lenovitz's single to right field after leading off the inning with a single up the middle.  Senior third baseman Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) picked up the next run following an error by the Bobcat first baseman.  Johnson reached base on a passed ball even though he had struck out.  FSU got out of the inning with a strikeout by sophomore reliever Tyler Hawthorne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont).

Frostburg answered back right away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to push its lead to 16-5 with one more inning left to play.  In the ninth inning, first-year pinch hitter Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) connected on a one-out double to left field to bring home senior leftfielder John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis). Junior Cody Ellsworth (Cumberland, Md./Allegheny), FSU's second reliever of the game, pitched a fly out and ground out to end the game.

Senior RHP Michael Victory (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) suffered the loss on the mound for the Seahawks as Victory gave up eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work while striking out five and walking three.

Lenovitz, Muscatelli, and Urso all paced the Seahawks at the plate with two hits each while Lenovitz drove in a pair of runs.

St. Mary's and Frostburg State will play two, seven-inning games tomorrow, Saturday, April 7 at 12:00 pm at Frostburg as the Seahawks look to wrap up their conference regular-season.
