St. Mary's Baseball Wraps up Conference Regular Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team ended its Capital Athletic Conference regular season with two losses at the hands of the defending CAC tournament champion, Frostburg State University, Saturday afternoon.  The FSU Bobcats posted 11-0 and 10-7 wins over St. Mary's to sweep the series.

In the first game, the St. Mary's (14-16, 6-12 CAC) bats were kept silent as FSU's senior RHP Zach O'Dell (White Plains, Md./Lackey) scattered just four hits, struck out six Seahawk batters, and walked only one for the complete game victory.

Four different St. Mary's players connected for singles while junior LHP Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) took the loss on the mound as Eisenberg allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.

St. Mary's regrouped and started the second half of the twin bill with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior 3B/P Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills), as the No. 5 hitter, doubled to left center to bring home senior leftfielder John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's, Annapolis) and first-year DH/3B Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air).  Stewart led off with a single to centerfield while Nadolny reached on an error by the Bobcat shortstop.  The Seahawks notched a three-run margin when junior centerfielder Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) singled to right field to score Johnson.  FSU used a strikeout to end the inning.

Frostburg State (17-12, 8-7 CAC) responded right away with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning.  The 3-3 draw remained until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the Seahawks regained a 5-3 advantage as Stewart started off the inning with a triple to left center before coming home on an error by the FSU second baseman.  Sophomore first baseman Alex Lenovitz (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall) notched the team's second run of the inning on a wild pitch after reaching on the error.

The Bobcat bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth inning as FSU unleashed seven runs for its first lead of the game, 10-5.  St. Mary's added a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to cut the deficit to 10-7 but after scoring its seventh run with two outs on the board, the rally fell short as a foul out to first base ended the game.

Senior RHP Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) was saddled with the Seahawk loss after giving up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 4.1 innings with five strikeouts and two walks.  Johnson paced St. Mary's at the plate for the day with a 3-for-5 effort while hurling 1.2 innings in the nightcap.

St. Mary's will look to snap its four-game slide on Tuesday, April 10 as the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Gallaudet University in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2:00 pm.
