Seahawk Men's Soccer Falls Short in Season-Opener

Box Score

Salisbury, Md. – The season-opening match for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team ended with a heartbreaking decision Friday afternoon as the Seahawks succumbed to a 1-0 loss to the Richard Stockton College Ospreys in overtime at the Elmer Lord Memorial Classic hosted by Salisbury University.

St. Mary's (0-1) outshot the Ospreys (1-0) by a 6-4 margin in the first half while holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks but RSC's goalkeeper Bob Millar (Green Ridge, N.J.) and the Stockton defensive line came up with three saves to preserve the scoreless draw.  Junior goalie Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) also posted a strong first half with three stops as well.

The tables turned in the second half with Richard Stockton owning a 10-7 edge in shots and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks but again Brown and Millar proved their mettle with three saves apiece in the second stanza to force overtime.

In overtime, Brown denied Chris Katona's initial shot on goal but unable to control the rebound and Katona gathered the loose ball and found the back of the net from the right side of the goal to end the contest just 1:13 into the extra period.

Brown finished the match with seven stops while corner kicks ended up even at six each.  Stockton edged the Seahawks, 16-13, in the shots category.

St. Mary's hopes for its first win of the season tomorrow when the Seahawks take on Penn State Altoona in the final match-up of the Lord Classic.  Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
