Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Twenty-eight shots and 110 minutes later, neither the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team nor York College of Pennsylvania could find the back of the net and the two squads had to settle for a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both sides.
York (2-1-3, 0-0-1 CAC) controlled the tempo of the first half with a 5-2 shot advantage and a 4-0 corner kick margin but junior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) made two stops to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard.
St. Mary's (2-2-1, 0-0-1 CAC) regrouped at halftime and closed the gap in the second half. The Seahawks claimed a 3-2 edge in corner kicks while trailing York, 7-6, in shots, putting sophomore keeper Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) to work. Glessner made three saves in the second 45 minutes of the contest while Wirtz came up with two more denials to force overtime.
It was all Seahawks in the first extra 10 minutes as the team fired off four shots, including two on target. Glessner received help from her defensive line as they came up with a pair of team saves on back-to-back shots by sophomore Liz Mosher (Bethesda, Md./Madeira [Va.]) and senior defender Virginia Williams (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) in the 93rd minute.
The Spartans withstood the attack and sent the match into a second overtime period. York took three shots, all off the mark, while the Seahawks earned one corner kick.
York garnered the 16-12 advantage in shots and a 6-4 margin in corner kicks.
Wirtz finished with four stops for the Seahawks in recording her second shutout of the season while Glessner picked up three saves in her fourth shutout.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 19 as St. Mary's travels to Baltimore to face No. 6 Johns Hopkins University (5-1-1) in non-conference action under the lights at 7:00 pm.
