Catholic Nips St. Mary's Men's Soccer

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team played in their sixth one-goal contest of the season Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 decision to Catholic University of America in non-conference action.

Catholic (4-3) struck first just nine minutes into the contest as junior Earl Hamilton (Fort Washington, Md./Gonzaga) fired a low, hard shot from the top right corner of the penalty box into the lower left corner.

Senior captain Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) put the Seahawks (2-6) on the scoreboard as Plaisance converted a penalty kick for a 1-1 draw at 22:00.

The two teams headed into halftime even with one goal apiece and that scored stood into the 52nd minute when senior midfielder Mike Brennan (Feasterville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) connected on a penalty kick for the eventual game-winning goal.

Junior goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) kept the Cardinals to a one goal lead 12 minutes later as Brown punched over the crossbar Brennan's second penalty kick attempt.

Catholic dominated the contest with an 18-5 shot advantage and a 6-1 corner kick margin.  Brown withstood the challenge, finished the match with eight saves.  Sophomore Cam McGrory (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle) made no saves in the Cardinal win.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Saturday, September 22 when the Seahawks welcome Wesley College to Seahawk Stadium for a Capital Athletic Conference contest at 4:00 pm.
