Box Score Hampden-Sydney, Va. – Senior midfielder Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) picked up a goal and an assist in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a 3-2 non-conference victory over the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers Wednesday afternoon.
Plaisance netted his second score of the season at 26:21 as he fired from the top of the box and the ball went just inside the left post for the 1-0 St. Mary's lead.
The Seahawks (2-1) notched a two-goal cushion at 34:07 as sophomore midfielder Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen) finished off a pass from fellow midfielder, senior Lukas Iraola (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase).
The two teams headed into halftime with a 2-1 score as Hampden-Sydney (1-2) avoided the shutout at 40:53 as Leo Kowalski (Glen Allen, Va.) put in James Lawrence's (Midlothian, Va.) rebound.
Four minutes into second half play, Plaisance fed sophomore forward Matt Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) for the eventual game-winning goal at 49:02.
The Tigers pulled within one again at 63:34 as Lawrence tallied the goal with Kowalski and Bo Burns (Raleigh, N.C.) assisted on the play.
Hampden-Sydney took four more shots in the final 17 minutes but one was denied by junior goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) and the other three were off the mark. The Tigers were also awarded two corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.
H-SC peppered the Seahawk defense with 21 shots while St. Mary's took 12. The hosts also owned an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Brown finished the game with eight stops for the Seahawk win.
St. Mary's will look to make it three in a row on Saturday, September 8 when the team opens up with Bridgewater (Va.) College at its own Seahawk Classic. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm. The Classic's second game features No. 12 Salisbury University taking on Centenary (N.J.) College at 4:00 pm.
