Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) helped to make it a memorable Saturday for the Seahawk seniors, scoring twice in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of Penn State Harrisburg in Capital Athletic Conference action.
Sawyer collected her third multiple-goal game of the season as she now leads the Seahawks in scoring with team-bests of seven goals and 16 points. The win kept St. Mary's (6-8-3, 5-2-0 CAC) third in the conference standings, one point behind York College of Pennsylvania (10-4-2, 5-1-1 CAC) and two points ahead of Salisbury University (9-5-3, 4-2-1 CAC).
The Seahawks have one more game left in the regular-season as they host conference newcomer, Christopher Newport University, on Tuesday, October 29 at 4:00 pm. CNU is the conference leader in its first year as a CAC member with a 13-2-1 (7-0 CAC) record.
St. Mary's scored all three goals in the first half as they outshot the Lions (7-10-0, 1-6-0 CAC) by a 13-0 margin and earned seven corner kicks to Harrisburg's zero. Junior midfielder Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) started the scoring at 9:04 as McCarty kneed in first-year Caroline Rivera's (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American) cross from the right side.
Six minutes later, Sawyer found the back of the net for her first of the day as senior midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) sent in a through ball from midfield and Sawyer ran onto it for the short volley into the goal.
St. Mary's third and final goal came at 23:24 as senior midfielder Marilyn Hucek (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) put through a long pass that Sawyer collected, dribbled a few steps and then shot into the lower right corner.
Penn State Harrisburg took only three shots (1 SOG) the entire game while St. Mary's fired 32 (12 SOG) and posted a 10-2 margin in corners.
Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) registered her third shutout of the season with just one save while junior Mackenzie Gates (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made nine saves for the Lions before leaving with an injury in the 85th minute.
