Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen) and first-year forward Matthew Yurich (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team back into the win column with a 2-0 shutout win over Capital Athletic Conference newcomer, Southern Virginia University, Saturday afternoon.
Even though Southern Virginia (0-10-1) is playing a full CAC schedule in 2013, its matches will not count in the conference standings and the Knights will not be eligible for the league playoffs until the 2014 season.
The Seahawks (4-5-2) dominated from the start and used a goal in each half to pick up their fourth win of the season. St. Mary's owned a 29-8 shot advantage as well as a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Yurich sent the Seahawks into halftime with a 1-0 lead as he collected a pass from first-year midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) and then dodged a Knight defender inside the box before finishing for his first collegiate goal at 40:48.
Southern Virginia picked up its intensity in the second half, peppering junior goalkeeper Nate Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) with eight shots but Ramsland came up with six saves to preserve the Seahawk lead.
Kalama added the insurance goal at 72:51 as he corralled a pass from junior defender Ben Haman (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and then ripped off a shot from about 20 yards out that curved away from sophomore goalie Scott Zaring (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest).
Senior captain Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) and Ramsland split time in goal to record St. Mary's fifth shutout win of the season. Zaring finished with 10 saves in the Knights' second straight loss.
St. Mary's will be back in action next Saturday, October 12th when the Seahawks welcome conference newcomer, Penn State Harrisburg, to Seahawk Stadium for a league match at 2:00 pm.
