Seahawk Men's Lacrosse Holds off No. 11 Roanoke in Home- and Season-Opener

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) netted four goals in his collegiate debut while sophomore midfielder Nate Babcock (Baltimore, Md./Severn School) collected a hat trick Sunday afternoon in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 13-12 home- and season-opening victory over No. 11 Roanoke College.

Today's triumph marks the first time since 2008 that the Seahawks (1-0) have posted a victory in their season-opener. It also kept St. Mary's perfect at Seahawk Stadium, extending the home win streak to eight in a row.

The Seahawks entered the fourth period with an 11-8 advantage and 15 minutes away from the win. Senior midfielder Mike Hayden (Vienna, Va./James Madison) pulled Roanoke (0-1) within two with his second goal of the afternoon at 13:36 before Jordan flicked in a low shot off an assist from senior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) for a three-goal cushion at 12:04.

First-year attackman Tyler McWilliams (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and senior attackman Conner DuBois (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) each scored man-up goals in a one-minute span to make it a 12-11 contest with 6:33 remaining in regulation. Jordan put St. Mary's back up by one with an unassisted goal 16 seconds later.

Senior attackman Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) brought Roanoke within one once again at the 2:50 mark. RC won the ensuing face-off but then committed two turnovers in a 1:20 span, allowing the Seahawks to kill the clock and hold on for the win.

Senior face-off specialist Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) dominated the spot at X, winning 21-of-25 face-offs against five different Maroon players. Mitchell also scooped up a game-high nine ground balls as the Seahawks posted a 33-22 margin in ground balls.

Play was even in the first stanza as St. Mary's and Roanoke each scored three times. The Seahawks edged RC in the second quarter, 3-2, to head into intermission with a 6-5 margin. In the third quarter, the visitors were outscored 5-3 as Jordan scored twice and sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) tallied a goal and two assists.

McWilliams paced the Maroons with three goals and two assists while DuBois finished with four points on three goals and an assist. St. Mary's first-year goalie Joey Casey (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) picked up 15 saves in his first start as a Seahawk while junior Charles Pease (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made 12 stops for RC.

The Seahawks will face their second ranked opponent in six days as St. Mary's takes on No. 8 Dickinson College on Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 pm. The game will be played at St. Paul's School in Brooklandville, Maryland.
