Box Score 2 Ft. Pierce, Fla. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team returned to the win column Tuesday afternoon as the Seahawks split their non-conference doubleheader with Albright College. St. Mary's posted an 11-1 victory in the first half of the DH before falling 7-3 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) paced St. Mary's 16-hit offense with a flawless performance at the plate with a 4-for-4 effort while senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) added two hits and drove in three runs.
Senior RHP Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) picked up his first win of the season as Cruz pitched 4.0 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and two walks.
The Seahawks (5-9) scored at least one run in all but two innings of the seven-inning game, including six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore right fielder Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) crossed home plate three times for St. Mary's and stole two bases.
In the nightcap, first-year southpaw Doug Franks (West Chester, Pa.) threw a complete game victory to remain undefeated on the season at 3-0. Franks allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Albright (5-3) staked a 3-0 advantage after the first three innings, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. The Seahawks responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to even up the game. Sophomore third baseman Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) led off the inning with a double to centerfield and then advanced to third on a ground out by Eaker. Junior captain Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) then singled to left field to bring home Nadolny for the first run of the fourth.
Napier then doubled to right field before first-year leftfielder Michael O'Neill (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) singled up the middle to score Lenovitz to cut the lead to one. O'Neill advanced to second on sophomore centerfielder Paul Roemer's (Westminster, Md./Westminster) ground out before first-year catcher Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) singled to right field to drive in Napier for the game-tying run. Franks put an end to the rally with a strikeout looking.
The Lions broke the draw with a single run in the fourth and then added an insurance run in the fifth before tacking on two more in the sixth. O'Neill was the only Seahawk with a multiple-hit game as he tallied two hits while sophomore Ryan Deller (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) suffered loss with 2.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on one hit while striking out two and walking one.
St. Mary's will return to action tomorrow as the Seahawks once again face Bridgewater State College. On Monday, St. Mary's dropped a 12-3 decision to Bridgewater State. Tomorrow's action starts at 10:00 am.
