Box Score Vero Beach, Fla. – Senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and junior third baseman Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) combined for a 6-for-7 effort at the plate with six RBI and four runs scored as the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team outlasted Bridgewater State College, 15-10, in Spring Break action at the Vero Beach Sports Village.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the first, one in the second and three more runs in the top of the third.
With one out in the top of the first, sophomore right fielder Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) singled to start the rally. Dioguardo would score off a long fly ball off the bat of sophomore designated hitter Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) which was mishandled and dropped in left field. The error allowed Nadolny to reach and advance to third as well on the play. Back to back two-out hits by Lenovitz and Napier would bring home two more runs for St. Mary's to stake a 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore second baseman Luke Green's (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) sacrifice fly in the top of the second would bring home first-year leftfielder Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), who singled to start the inning, for the fourth run of the game for St. Mary's. Bridgewater State responded in the bottom of the second with two runs on three hits to pull within one run at 4-3.
Three more runs in the top of the third inning by the Seahawks again secured a four-run advantage at 7-3. However, as in the previous inning, Bridgewater State would not allow the Seahawks to run away with the game, pushing two more runs across the plate and after holding St. Mary's scoreless for the first time in the game in the top of the fourth, the Bears scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to knot the game at seven runs apiece.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Bridgewater State took its first lead of the game with a single run for an 8-7 lead.
Finding themselves down for the first time all day, the Seahawks responded with a huge four-run seventh inning to regain the lead at 11-8. Four consecutive hits by the Seahawks propelled the inning as sophomore centerfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) started off the inning with a one-out single and then stole second to get him into scoring position. Roemer was brought home on an RBI double from Green. Dioguardo would then single home Green for the second run of the inning and put the Seahawks ahead, 9-8. Nadolny doubled for the fourth straight hit, bringing home Dioguardo and giving St. Mary's a 10-8 lead. Following a ground out for the second out of the inning, Lenovitz singled to bring home Nadolny for the fourth run of the inning and St. Mary's took a three-run lead into the bottom of the seventh.
The Bears would put together a rally in the bottom of the inning to pull within one run after a two-out, two-run homer by senior catcher Matt Barsaleau (Holland, Mass.). The two teams would hold each other scoreless in the eighth inning for only the second time of the game as St. Mary's held onto to a slim one-run lead heading into the ninth and final inning of play.
Looking for a little insurance, St. Mary's rallied in the top of the ninth for four runs with two outs. With runners on first and second, the Bears' pitcher was called for a balk pushing both runners into scoring position with Napier at the plate. As he had done all day, Napier connected for a two-out double to score Lenovitz and Eaker, giving the Seahawks a three-run lead. Senior catcher Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), the Seahawks' next batter, unloaded on a pitch for a two-run homer – his first of the season – to seal the win for St. Mary's. Bridgewater State would go quietly in the bottom of the ninth as the Seahawks claimed the 15-10 win.
Napier finished the day 4-for-4 with three RBI, two walks and two runs scored while Lenovitz finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, two walks and two runs scored as well. Green and Muscatelli added two RBI apiece. Junior pitcher Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) picked up the win in relief action, pitching 3.0 innings and giving up two runs on six hits.
St. Mary's will return to action tomorrow as the Seahawks conclude their Spring Break with a non-conference game against Norwich University at 10:00 am.
