Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team fell in the final game of its three-game conference series against the University of Mary Washington, 11-0, Sunday afternoon.
It was a different situation from the opening two games of the series between the Seahawks and Mary Washington when the Eagles needed 14 innings to muster a 3-2 win in the first half of the doubleheader and three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie in the second game to sweep the DH.
In the series finale, it was all Mary Washington as the Eagles connected for twenty hits and held St. Mary's to just six as the Seahawks got singles from six different hitters.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning of action and utilized a solid pitching performance by senior starter Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va.). Mancari pitched 7.0 strong shutout innings while striking out 12 Seahawk batters. Mary Washington added runs in six of the eight innings they batted in en route to the 11-0 victory.
St. Mary's was unable to string together more than one hit in a single inning until the eighth, advancing the Seahawks' only runner of the day into scoring position off back-to-back singles. With two outs already recorded in the inning, sophomore Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) ripped a single up the middle to centerfield to place a runner on first. Classmate Matt Holdefer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) followed with a single to left field for runners on first and second before the rally ended with a fly-out to right field.
Senior pitcher Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) suffered the loss for the Seahawks as Jerrard gave up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 4.0 innings on the mound while striking out three Eagles.
St. Mary's will return to the field this Wednesday, March 20 when the Seahawks travel to Chestertown, Maryland for a non-conference single game against Washington College at 3:00 pm.
