Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped a pair Saturday afternoon to McDaniel College in a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 6-1 and 11-6.
The Seahawks (3-5) struck first in the opening game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) led off the inning with a single to right field, advanced to second on a ground out to third by sophomore Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) and then to third on a fly out to right field by senior Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ripken). With Green on third with two outs, sophomore Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./ Bel Air) ripped an RBI single up the middle to bring home Green and put St. Mary's on the board with a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the first inning rally would be the lone inning the Seahawks could string together an offense while the Green Terror responded immediately with two runs in the top of the second and another in the top of the third. McDaniel (2-2) would add a few insurance runs in the late innings with one in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a final of 6-1.
In the nightcap, the Green Terror and the Seahawks were scoreless through the first three innings of action before McDaniel opened up with four runs in the top of the fourth and three more in top of the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
St. Mary's not looking to go away easily, responded with a six-run rally of its own in the bottom of the sixth, starting off the inning with four consecutive hits, including two extra base hits to pull within one run of McDaniel. Green again got the offense started for the Seahawks, leading off the sixth with a single to left field, a balk by the McDaniel pitcher put Green in scoring position with no outs. Eaker followed with a single of his own, driving home Green for the first St. Mary's run of the game. Napier then lined a double down the left field line, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Nadolny, clutch all day, mirrored Napier's efforts with a rocket double down the left field line to bring home both Eaker and Napier and pull the Seahawks within four runs at 7-3.
St. Mary's would load the bases with one out following a single by first-year Michael O'Neill (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and a walk to senior Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake). The Seahawks took advantage and pushed two more runs across before the Green Terror finally recorded the final out of the inning, but not before St. Mary's pulled within one run, 7-6.
McDaniel regrouped over the half inning and responded with four runs in the top of the seventh and final inning for the final tally of 11-6.
Junior Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) suffered the loss in the opening game, surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings. Senior Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) shouldered the loss in the nightcap, giving up five runs on eight hits in four innings of action. St. Mary's was led by Nadolny and Eaker at the plate as they finished a combined 7-for-14 with four runs batted in on the afternoon.
The Seahawks will look to return to the win column Sunday, March 3, as they welcome the Bullets of Gettysburg College to the Hawk's Nest for a single non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
