Seahawk Baseball Falls Short at Washington College

Box Score

Chestertown, Md. – Sophomore second baseman Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) was flawless at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort but the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped a 9-4 non-conference decision at Washington College Wednesday afternoon.

Green picked up three of St. Mary's hits on the day while adding a RBI and a run scored. Senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) also had a multiple-hit day with a 2-for-4 plate appearance, driving in one run and scoring one of his own.

St. Mary's (7-13) staked an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as sophomore right fielder Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) came home on sophomore catcher Jared Eaker's (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) single down the right field line after Dioguardo reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Back-to-back fly outs to the outfield ended the Seahawk inning.

Washington (7-7) took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second before the Seahawks reclaimed the lead in the third with two runs of their own. After leading off with a single and advancing to second on Dioguardo's sacrifice bunt, Green came home on Napier's single up the middle. Napier then crossed home plate on senior first baseman Alex Lenovitz's single to right center for a 3-2 lead. A fly out to the outfield once again ended St. Mary's inning.

After keeping the Shoremen off the scoreboard in the third, St. Mary's increased its lead to two with an additional run in the fourth. Junior leftfielder Eric Skrzyniarz (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) drew a lead-off walk and then came home on Green's single to right center after Skrzyniarz advanced to second on senior DH Stefano Muscatelli's (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) sac bunt. A fly out to the outfield ended the Seahawks' scoring for the third time.

The Shoremen pulled within one in the fourth before rallying with three runs in the fifth to boast a 6-4 advantage. Washington tacked on three more in the seventh as sophomore DH Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, Md.) led the inning off with a solo shot to leftfield.

St. Mary's finished the game with four runs on seven hits and three errors while the Shoremen notched nine runs on nine hits and made one error. Senior RHP Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) suffered the loss on the mound for the Seahawks, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, March 23 when the Seahawks welcome No. 1 Salisbury University to the Hawk's Nest for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
