Seahawk Baseball Drops A Pair at York (Pa.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

York, Pa. – After edging York College of Pennsylvania, 4-3, yesterday, the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team lost the series Saturday afternoon with two losses in Pennsylvania. The Spartans posted victories of 6-1 and 3-2 to claim the Capital Athletic Conference series.

In the first game, senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) was the only Seahawk with a multiple-hit effort as Napier went 2-for-3, including his second home run of the season, with an RBI and a run scored. Senior LHP Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) suffered the loss on the mound as Eisenberg (1-5) gave up six runs on six hits with just two strikeouts. Senior Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

York (9-11, 3-6 CAC) posted a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as senior second baseman Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J.) connected on a two-run RBI single to centerfield followed by an RBI double by junior catcher Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin). The final Spartan run of the inning came on senior third baseman Justin Cohen's (Severn, Md./Old Mill) sacrifice fly to centerfield. York then scored twice in the fifth before Napier knocked out a lead-off home run in the top of the seventh inning.

The Spartans notched the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as York started off the inning with consecutive walks and then loaded the bases on a fielder's choice. Senior right fielder Drew Frankenfield's (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) sacrifice fly to right field scored Worthman. Cohen, who reached on a fielder's choice, then advanced to second on a passed ball. First-year Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) relieved junior Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) with one out and then retired the next two batters in order to end York's rally.

St. Mary's shot at a rally in the top of the seventh was denied as sophomore reliever Zach Philippi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) sat down the side in order with two strikeouts and a ground out to second base. Philippi recorded the win in the nightcap without giving up a single hit or run in 2.1 innings of work.

York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of sacrifice flies to the right field. The Seahawks (10-16, 3-6 CAC) responded with two runs in the fourth to even up the game at 2-2. Junior captain Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) hit a two-out, two-run RBI single to score sophomores Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic), who had a leadoff walk, and Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin), who singled. A ground out to first base ended St. Mary's rally.

Dioguardo paced the Seahawks at the plate with a flawless 2-for-2 effort with a one run scored while Beatty (0-2) took the loss on the mound with 5.1 innings of work, yielding three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

For the afternoon, Herr and junior centerfielder Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) led the Spartans at the plate with three hits each. Sophomore southpaw Josh Miller (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) picked up the win in the first game as Miller (3-1) threw the complete game, allowing just one run on six hits with five strikeouts.

St. Mary's will look to bounce back on Monday, April 1 when the Seahawks welcome Washington College to the Hawk's Nest for a non-conference game at 3:30 pm. This will be the second meeting of the season as Washington posted a 9-4 win at home on March 20.
