St. Mary's Baseball Nips Washington College

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team avenged an earlier loss to Washington College by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge the visiting Shoremen, 8-7, in non-conference action Monday afternoon.

After a lead-off strikeout, senior catcher Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) singled to right center and then advanced to second on senior leftfielder Mike Schmidt's (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) ground out. Sophomore second baseman Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) stepped up to the plate, singled to right field, and went to second on an error by the right fielder while Muscatelli scored on the play to even up the score at 7-7.

Green scored the decisive run on sophomore leftfielder Brad Dioguardo's (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) RBI double to leftfield. Washington avoided a bigger deficit with a fly out to center.

First-year reliever Ben Goldsmith (Ellicott City, Md./Kensington), having the one-run advantage in hand, opened up Washington's ninth inning with a strikeout looking before walking sophomore first baseman Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, Md./Curley). Junior Pat Kinsella (Guilford, Conn./Guilford), pinch-running for Thomas, stole second before advancing to third on sophomore catcher Kyle Mikula's (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) fly out to centerfield. The Shoremen's rally ended when Kinsella was thrown out as he tried to steal home.

Goldsmith, who came in for sophomore A.J. Norby (Wayne, Pa./Shipley) in the fifth inning, improved to 2-1 on the season as he threw 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Dioguardo was the leader at the plate with a 3-for-5 day, including a double, with two RBI while senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) knocked in a pair of triples and drove in two runs as well. Muscatelli also finished the day with two hits.

Washington (10-11) struck first with a run in the top of the first inning before the Seahawks (11-16) responded with three runs in their half of the first inning. St. Mary's then staked a 5-1 advantage with two more runs in the second. The Shoremen cut the deficit to 5-3 with two runs in third and then tied up the game at 5-5 with two scores in the fourth.

St. Mary's then claimed a one-run lead in the fifth as Napier connected on a lead-off triple before scoring on sophomore first baseman Jared Eaker's (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) fielder's choice. The Shoremen retook the lead in the sixth as Washington pushed a pair of runs across home plate on a two-out RBI single by first-year centerfielder Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) and a wild pitch.

Baquer had a solid day for the Shoremen at the plate as he went 4-for-5, including a double, with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Tom Fiala (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury), who came in for the final innings of the game, was saddled with the loss as Fiala pitched 2.0 innings, scattering two runs on three hits with one strikeout.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Thursday, April 4 when the Seahawks welcome The Catholic University of America to the Hawk's Nest for a non-conference game at 3:30 pm.
