St. Mary's Baseball Takes One from Wesley

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team kept their hopes alive for a first round home game in the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament by splitting Saturday's doubleheader at Wesley College. The Seahawks claimed a 3-2 victory in the first game before Wesley responded with an 8-2 win in the nightcap.

If St. Mary's (13-20, 5-9 CAC) captures Sunday's rubber match, the Seahawks will finish as the fourth seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament and host fifth-seeded Wesley (17-13, 6-8 CAC) in the first round on Tuesday, April 16 at the Hawk's Nest. However, if Wesley wins on Sunday, then the Wolverines will be the third seed and host sixth-seeded St. Mary's on Tuesday in Dover.

The Seahawks posted the come-from-behind one-run triumph in the first half of the doubleheader as sophomore Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) hit a two-out RBI single to bring home senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), who reached base after being hit by one of junior Andrew Cooper's (Wilmington, Del.) pitches and then advanced to second on a ground out. With runners on first and second after another hit by pitch, Cooper and the Wolverines avoided further damage with a pop up to first base.

Junior southpaw Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), who relieved senior starter Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) one out into the fourth inning, gave up a lead-off single to senior Steve Perone (Skillman, N.J.) before retiring the side in order to seal the win. Coe improved to 5-1 on the season with 3.2 innings of relief, scattering three hits and walking two. Eaker paced the Seahawks at the plate with two of their seven hits.

Wesley had staked a 2-0 lead in the first game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Seahawks tied it up with single-run efforts in the top of the fifth and sixth innings.

St. Mary's jumped out to the early lead in the second half of the twin bill with two runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) connected on a two-out, two-run home run as the cleanup batter, scoring himself and Napier, who had a two-out single to leftfield. Wesley ended the rally with a ground out to first-year pitcher Eric Willey (Seaford, Del.).

It was all Wesley after that as the Seahawks were held to just five more hits in the remaining six innings while the Wolverines scored eight runs on eight hits and three St. Mary's errors. The Wolverines took over the lead in the bottom of the third inning with three runs on three Seahawk errors. Wesley added to its lead with three additional runs in the fifth for a 6-2 advantage. The home team finished off the game by tacking on two more in the sixth.

Willey picked up his first win of the season by pitching all 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. He retired the Seahawk side in order in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. First-year right fielder Trevor Mears (Millsboro, Del.) paced the Wolverine offense on the afternoon with a 4-for-7 effort with two hits in each game, including two doubles in the nightcap, as well as three RBI and two runs scored.

Senior starter Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) took the loss on the mound for St. Mary's after going 4.1 innings and giving up six runs (three earned) on six hits with just one walk. Nadolny was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and his second home run of the season as well as two RBI.
