Box Score Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team's rally came up short as the Seahawks dropped a 10-7 decision at Wesley College Sunday afternoon in the final Capital Athletic Conference regular-season game of the season.
The win clinched the third-seed for Wesley (18-13, 7-8 CAC) while St. Mary's (13-21, 5-10 CAC) fell to sixth in the conference standings. The Seahawks will travel to the Eastern Shore on Tuesday, April 16 to face top-seeded Salisbury University at 3:30 pm in the first round of the 2013 CAC Baseball Championship Tournament.
Wesley exploded for seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back en route to the 10-7 victory. The Wolverines notched 10 runs on nine hits while committing two errors for the game.
The Seahawks reclaimed three runs in the top of the second inning as sophomore Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md.) sent a single to centerfield to bring home senior Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) and junior Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), who both hit singles as the first two batters of the inning. Sophomore Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) then stepped up with a single of his own to drive in senior Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), who reached on an infield single. A pop up to first ended the inning for St. Mary's and gave Wesley a 7-3 lead after two.
The Wolverines picked up another run in the fourth for a five-run advantage before St. Mary's responded with two in the fifth. Lenovitz picked up his first double of the season to drive in sophomore Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air), who led off the inning with a walk. Lenovitz then scored on an error by the WC right fielder.
St. Mary's continued its comeback in the sixth with two more runs as Nadolny tallied his third home run of the season with a two-out, two-run shot to left field, pulling within 8-7. Senior Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) also scored as Napier reached on a fielding error by the Wolverine shortstop.
Wesley sealed the win with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings while relievers Ben Patti (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and senior Rich Lober (Wilmington, Del.) kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard, holding them to just two hits in the final three innings.
Lenovitz led the Seahawks at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort – a third of St. Mary's nine hits. Junior starter Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) was saddled with the loss, giving up six runs on two hits with two walks in 0.1 innings pitched.
Junior Zach Stuart (Palmyra, Pa.) earned the win with 5.0 innings of work, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
