Seahawk Baseball Eliminated from CAC Tournament

Box Score

Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team bowed out of the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament Friday morning with a 15-5 loss to fifth-seeded York College of Pennsylvania in second round action of the double-elimination tournament at Salisbury University.

The No. 6 seed Seahawks (13-23) took the York pitchers for 12 hits but St. Mary's was unable to push enough runs across the plate, scoring all five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Senior shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md. St. Mary's Ryken) and first-year leftfielder Michael O'Neill (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) paced the Seahawk offense with two hits apiece while sophomore third baseman Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) contributed three RBI and a run scored.

The York Spartans (17-16) ran off to an 8-0 start after three innings of play as York posted four runs in the opening inning and then added four more in the third. YCP picked up 10 of its 18 hits in those two scoring innings, highlighted by a two-out, two-RBI single through the right side in the first by junior shortstop Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa.) and a three-RBI double to leftfield by senior first baseman Nic Long (North Wildwood, N.J.) in the third.

St. Mary's bats woke up in the fifth as the Seahawks notched half of their hits in that inning. Sophomore centerfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led off the inning with a bunt single followed by a single to centerfield by sophomore second baseman Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic), moving Roemer to second. After a fly out to right field, Napier singled through the left side to bring home Roemer and advance Green to second. Nadolny then stepped up to the plate and ripped his fourth home run of the season, slicing the Seahawk deficit in half.

First-year designated hitter Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) continued the rally for St. Mary's with a single to left field before another fly out gave the Seahawks two outs on the board. O'Neill then doubled to left center to score Eaker and pull his team within 8-5. York got out of the inning with a ground out to the shortstop.

No runs were scored by either team in the sixth but York erupted for six in the bottom of the seventh, netting six on four hits and two Seahawk errors. The Spartans received a pair of RBI doubles from seniors Justin Cohen (Severn, Md.) and Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa.). YCP added one more in the eighth off an RBI single by senior second baseman Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J.) after the Seahawks had turned a double play.

Senior lefty Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) took the loss on the mound for St. Mary's, falling to 2-7 on the season after allowing eight runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work with two strikeouts and one walk.

Junior centerfielder Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa.) led the Spartans at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort, including two doubles, while driving in two runs and scoring two. Porter finished the morning with three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored while Long had three RBI and two runs scored. York's junior left-hander Josh Miller (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) improved to 5-2 on the season as Miller threw 6.1 innings, giving up five runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Seahawks will wrap up the 2012-13 season on Sunday, April 28 with a non-conference doubleheader at the Hawk's Nest against former CAC foe, Gallaudet University. First pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm.
