St. Mary's Baseball Splits Doubleheader in Season Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team closed out their 2013 campaign with a 14-24 overall record on a cloudy, windy afternoon by splitting their non-conference doubleheader with the Gallaudet University Bison. The Seahawks garnered a 7-6 triumph in the first game while Gallaudet claimed a 4-3 victory in extra innings in the nightcap.

Junior southpaw Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) notched his second save of the season in the first game by coming in and getting the final out of the game with the game-tying run on second, fanning first-year leftfielder Brad Stockdill (Charlotte, N.C./Laurel) to end the game.

Senior starter Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) evened out his record for the year with a 3-3 mark after throwing 5.1 innings with five walks, four strikeouts, one wild pitch and one hit batter. Jerrard surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits.

St. Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind a two-RBI single by sophomore Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air). Nadolny then scored on senior Stefano Muscatelli's (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) RBI single after advancing to second on a walk and to third on an error. Gallaudet earned its first run in the top of the third inning as senior Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) knocked in the run with a single to left.

The Seahawks answered in the same inning with four more runs to stake a 7-1 advantage, using RBI singles by junior captain Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), Muscatelli and sophomore Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Gallaudet then tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 7-3 before unleashing three in the seventh to come within one. The Bison scored their runs in the seventh on an RBI single by senior Jeremy Adams (Glenn Dale, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), a Seahawk error and a wild pitch.

The nightcap was tied at 1-1 after the first inning of action before a Lenovitz RBI single gave St. Mary's a 2-1 edge in the fourth. The Seahawks went up 3-1 in the fifth as sophomore Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) delivered a single to right field to score first-year Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun).

Gallaudet (20-19) responded with two in the sixth to knot the contest at 3-3 as junior Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) connected on an RBI double and sophomore Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio/Russia) chipped in an RBI single. Both pitchers retired the sides in order in the seventh inning to force an eighth.

Hicks made contact for the game-winning hit with a one-out single to score Barksdale who reached base with a triple. The Seahawks got out of the inning without further damage by turning a double play. In St. Mary's half of the eighth, junior Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler Vo-Tech) gave up a lead-off single to Dioguardo before retiring the side in order to secure the Bison win, improving Smith's record to 3-5 after 3.0 scoreless relief innings with three hits and one strikeout.

Muscatelli, Dioguardo, Lenovitz and Nadolny all paced the Seahawks at the plate with three singles each while Nadolny recorded three RBI and scored three times, Junior Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) suffered the loss in the second game with 1.0 inning of relief, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and one wild pitch.

Bensman finished the afternoon 4-for-7 with one run scored, one RBI and one walk for the Bison.
