Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team took one of two from Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action on Senior Day. Frostburg State picked up a 5-1 victory in the first game before the Seahawks rebounded with a 1-0 shutout in eight innings for the nightcap triumph.
Prior to the start of today's doubleheader, the Seahawks recognized their seven seniors: catcher Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), outfielder Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake), shortstop Corey Napier (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), RHP Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills), LHP Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends), RHP Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin), and RHP E.J. Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air).
In the first game, the bats were quiet through the first three innings until Frostburg State (16-11, 4-7 CAC) finally broke through in the top of the fourth. The Bobcats' lone run of the inning resulted from junior third baseman Dylan Shupe's (Delmar, Del./Delmar) sacrifice fly to leftfield, bringing home junior centerfielder Kevin Kean (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) who drew a lead-off walk. St. Mary's avoided further damage by retiring the final two batters in order.
Frostburg exploded for four runs in the seventh on four hits and one error. Senior first baseman Jon Keeler (Waldorf, Md./North Point) and junior Mike Virbickis (Eldersburg, Md./Century) each picked up an RBI single while the final two runs resulted from an infield Seahawk error.
St. Mary's avoided the shutout with a run in its half of the seventh as sophomore centerfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) connected on a lead off bunt single then advanced to second on a wild pitch before crossing home plate on sophomore second baseman Luke Green's (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) single to right field. A one-out single by Napier and sophomore Zach Nadolny (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases for junior reliever Kenny Georgius (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Georgius threw consecutive strikeouts to record his first save of the season.
Junior Austin Poretz (Lothian, Md./St. Mary's) improved to 3-2 on the season with 6.1 innings of work, giving up one run on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks, while Kean extended his hit streak to 24 straight with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
Eisenberg won the pitchers' duel in the nightcap as he held Frostburg State to just three hits, including ending Kean's hit streak at 24 games with an 0-for-3 effort. Eisenberg struck out a season-high six batters and walked just one in 8.0 innings for his seventh career complete game.
Both offenses were silent through seven innings as the teams combined for four hits and nine runners left on base. Eisenberg faced only six FSU batters in the eighth as he gave up a lead-off single, pitched a fly-out to right field, hit the next batter and then got out of the inning with a pair of fly-outs.
Junior leftfielder Eric Skrzyniarz (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) got the eighth going for the Seahawks with a lead-off walk before Cruz came in to pinch run. Roemer then hit a one-out single for runners on first and second before a double steal advanced them to second and third. Green connected on the game-winning single to score Cruz for the win.
St. Mary's will wrap up its series with Frostburg State tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm at the Hawk's Nest.
