Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The two-out rally fell short for the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks dropped a 7-6 decision in the 'rubber match' to Frostburg State University. With the win, Frostburg State claims the Capital Athletic Conference series and moves into a three-way for fourth in the standings with Wesley College and York College of Pennsylvania.
The Seahawks (12-19, 4-8 CAC) looked to pull off the comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning as first-year right fielder Michael O'Neill (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) sparked St. Mary's offense with a two-out single to left field before senior Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) came in to pinch run for O'Neill. Senior catcher Stefano Muscatelli (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) advanced Schmidt to second with another single and then senior Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) pinch ran for Muscatelli.
Sophomore centerfielder Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) stepped up to the plate and connected on an RBI single to score Schmidt but Cruz was thrown out at third to put an end to the Seahawk rally and preserve Frostburg State's 7-6 win.
St. Mary's edged Frostburg, 12-11, in hits while both teams committed three errors apiece. Four Seahawks collected two hits each while junior starter Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) was saddled with the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on three hits as Beatty (0-3) walked three Bobcats and fanned one in 2.1 innings.
Frostburg (17-11, 5-7 CAC) opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning with six runs on five hits and two Seahawk errors. St. Mary's got three back in the fourth behind RBI singles by junior captain Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Muscatelli as well as O'Neill's drawn walk with bases loaded.
The Bobcats then added another in the fifth to stake a four-run cushion as junior centerfielder Kevin Kean (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) crossed home plate on a St. Mary's throwing error. The Seahawks kept right in stride with Frostburg with a run of their own in their half of the fifth. Sophomore designated hitter Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) singled up the middle to bring home sophomore leftfielder Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin), who led off the inning with a single.
St. Mary's continued to chip away at the Bobcats' lead by tacking on another run in the sixth to close the gap to two. Roemer scored the Seahawks' fifth run of the game on senior shortstop Corey Napier's (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) RBI single. Roemer got a lead-off walk and then advanced to second on Dioguardo's walk before crossing home plate.
Four Bobcats connected on two hits apiece while junior southpaw Curtis Randall (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) recorded his third win of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings. Randall struck out two and walked two while junior Kenny Georgius (Westminster, Md./Westminster) notched his second save of the weekend with 3.0 solid innings. Georgius yielded one run on four hits with two strikeouts.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Friday, April 12 when the Seahawks travel to Dover, Delaware to take on Wesley College in the final conference regular-season series of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
