Sawyer Carries St. Mary's Women's Soccer to Tournament Title

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) scores twice in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to the championship title of their own Seahawk Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks posted a 3-2 non-conference win over the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Hosting its first tournament since 2005, St. Mary's (1-0-1) erased a 1-0 deficit with three consecutive goals in the second half, including back-to-back scores by Sawyer. Coast Guard (1-1) pulled within one with just five minutes left in regulation as sophomore Sarah Hills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished off a cross from fellow classmate Madison Ahlers (Los Alamos, N.M.).

The Bears continued their pressure on the St. Mary's defense but the last two shots taken by CGA in the final five minutes went wide to preserve the 3-2 Seahawk win.

Rutgers University-Newark (1-0-1) picked up a 2-0 win over Randolph-Macon College (0-2) in the consolation game of the Seahawk Invitational while Newark's first-year goalkeeper Diana Aviles (Bloomfield, N.J.) was named the Most Outstanding Freshman of the tournament.

St. Mary's junior defender Caryn Thompson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player following her consistent, solid defensive play over the weekend.

All-Tournament Team: Kelsey Wirtz (SMC), Katherine Schaffer (SMC), Marilyn Hucek (SMC), Yvonne Latour (SMC), Madison Ahlers (CGA), Terry Netusil (CGA), Judy Hooymans (CGA), Julie Dantoni (RUN), Kathy Jironza (RUN), Caroline Hollandsworth (R-MC), and Katherine Schwalen (R-MC).

Coast Guard staked an early 1-0 lead behind junior forward Lindsay Duplessis' (Rye, N.H.) goal off a short pass inside the box by first-year Terry Netusil (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) at 20:06. The Bears' one-goal advantage held through halftime.

Sophomore forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) evened up the score at 49:06 with an unassisted goal as Konecke ripped in a shot from 25 yards out. Sawyer struck for her first tally of the day at 57:13 as she trapped a long pass from senior captain Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), dribbled into the box and shot it over senior goalkeeper Devin Fellman (New Port Richey, Fla.).

Sawyer then notched an unassisted goal at 61:08 as she had a sliding kick to send the ball into the far left corner past a diving Fellman.

Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) picked up six saves as Coast Guard fired off 19 shots to the Seahawks' eight, including 14 in the second half alone. The Bears also tallied a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Fellman finished with two stops in the loss.

The Seahawks will look to keep the unbeaten streak alive when they compete in the Stevenson University Tournament on September 7-8. St. Mary's will take on William Paterson University at 4:00 pm on the 7th.
