Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team took on the No. 2 team in the country, Johns Hopkins University, and played tough but succumbed to a 4-1 non-conference setback Wednesday afternoon.
Johns Hopkins (8-0-0) posted a 2-0 halftime lead behind a 17-1 shot advantage and a 6-0 corner kick margin. First-year defender Adrienne Johnson (Middletown, Del.) and senior midfielder Pamela Vranis (Potomac, Md.) helped put the Blue Jays on top in the first half.
Nearly two minutes into the second stanza, junior Sydney Teng (Fairport, N.Y.) gave Hopkins a three-goal lead. Senior captain Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) cut the lead to two as Rambo headed in senior Stephanie Schultz's (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) corner kick at the near post.
The Blue Jays tacked on their fourth goal in the 69th minute as JHU finished the game with a 14-1 shot on goal count and 10-1 corner kick margin.
First-year goalkeeper Sara Eaton (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) finished the contest with a season-best 10 saves on 29 shots faced.
St. Mary's (1-4-2) will be back in action this Saturday, September 21st when the Seahawks travel to Glassboro, N.J. to face Rowan University in non-conference action at 1:00 pm. Rowan (6-1), who is ranked seventh in the South Atlantic region, will be the fifth New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent this season. The Seahawks are 0-2-2 against NJAC foes this season.
