Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team recorded their second straight tie as the Seahawks (2-4-2) battled Hampden-Sydney College (3-3-1) to a scoreless draw in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.
The first 90 minutes of the contest were evenly matched with St. Mary's edging the Tigers, 11-9, in shots while corner kicks were equal at two apiece. First-year forward Zach Fontenot (Middletown, Md./Middletown) gave the Seahawks their best opportunity to win the game with 55 seconds left in regulation. Fontenot took a hard shot at the near post but first-year goalkeeper Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./South Kent) was right there to turn him away.
Hampden-Sydney dominated the 20 minutes of overtime as the Tigers' posted a 7-0 shot advantage as well as a 3-0 corner kick margin. H-SC's best chance came in the second overtime period with 7:41 remaining as first-year forward Robert Kerby (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) fired in a shot just inside the left post but senior captain Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) used a kick save to deny the shot.
Brown finished with five saves for his first shutout of the season while McFarlane tallied five stops as well for his third shutout of the year.
St. Mary's will look for its third win of the season on Saturday, September 28th when the Seahawks open up Capital Athletic Conference action at Marymount (Va.) University. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm at Long Bridge Park (Arlington, Va.).
