Box Score Newport News, Va. – Midfielders Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) and Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen) each found the back of the net for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team Thursday evening but the Seahawks dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 11 Christopher Newport University in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The loss marks the second in conference play for St. Mary's (7-7, 3-2 CAC) and the Seahawks slip to a two-way tie for fourth with University of Mary Washington in the CAC standings.
Christopher Newport (12-1-3, 3-0-2 CAC) did all of its damage in the first half as the Captains stretched their conference-leading goal total to 49 with a 5-0 halftime advantage. First-year forward Henry Gotay (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) paced CNU with two goals off the bench while sophomore midfielder Harry Nodwell (Devon, England/Exmouth CC) added a goal and an assist.
After being held without a shot in the first half, the Seahawks made the most of their three shots, scoring twice to avoid the shutout. Tait struck first for St. Mary's with an unassisted goal at 56:28 for his fourth tally of the season, equaling the team lead. Kalama followed with his first score of the season at 75:39 off an assist by junior forward Davis Holland (Pelletier, N.C./Leonardtown [N.C.]).
Christopher Newport finished the match with a 32-3 advantage in shots, including a 20-0 margin in the first half. The Captains also posted an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.
First-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) picked up six stops in the loss while junior Sam Lesko (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) notched one save to help the Captains extend their unbeaten streak to 11 consecutive matches.
The Seahawks will look to get back in the win column this Saturday, October 18th when St. Mary's welcomes Wesley College (7-5-1, 2-3 CAC) to Seahawk Stadium for another CAC tilt at 4:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
Before the game gets underway on Saturday, the five Seahawk seniors – Matt Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic), Alexander Driessen (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), Ben Haman (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), Kalama, and Nate Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) will be honored.
