Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Liz Mosher (Bethesda, Md./Madeira [Va.]) netted the game's lone goal in the first half to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference win over York College of Pennsylvania on a soggy Wednesday afternoon.
The win puts St. Mary's (8-5-2, 5-2-0 CAC) in a two-way tie with Salisbury University for second in the CAC standings as both squads have 15 points on five wins.
Shots were even in the first half with each side firing four while York (8-4-3, 4-2-1 CAC) edged the Seahawks 2-1 in corner kicks. However, it was St. Mary's breaking through in the 40th minute.
Junior Teresa Paz (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) dribbled up the right side and took the ball inside the box before giving a short cross to the left to a streaking Mosher, who then chipped it in over senior goalkeeper Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) for the 1-0 lead at 39:46.
Junior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) had a dangerous opportunity for the Seahawks at the start of the second half as Konecke's shot at 57:00 hit off the post and ricocheted in front of the goal before being cleared by the York defense.
York had some solid scoring chances in the second half, including a dangerous header by senior forward Jordan Snook (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) in the final seconds of the game that first-year Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) was able to snag out of the air as time expired.
The Spartans have only won once at Seahawk Stadium as St. Mary's now owns an 11-1-1 record at home against York. York's last win in St. Mary's City was a 5-2 decision in 2004. The two sides played to a scoreless draw in 2012.
York posted an 11-9 shot advantage while the Seahawks tallied a 5-4 margin in corner kicks.
Larkin made six saves in recording her sixth solo shutout and helping St. Mary's extend its win streak to two. Glessner finished with three saves as the Spartans had their unbeaten streak halted at four.
The Seahawks will continue with CAC action this Saturday, October 25th as St. Mary's makes the trek down to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on Southern Virginia University (6-9-2, 2-5-0 CAC) at 7:00 p.m.
