Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Jackson Ranheim (Florence, Italy/International School of Florence) kept the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team atop of the Capital Athletic Conference standings as Ranheim's goal lifted the Seahawks to a 1-0 win over Frostburg State University Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (6-5, 2-0 CAC) is now one of only two teams with two CAC wins so far this season. The other you ask? It's No. 20 Salisbury University (8-0-3, 2-0 CAC). In all, there are four squads with unbeaten records as No. 13 Christopher Newport University and York College of Pennsylvania are both 1-0-1 in the conference.
St. Mary's and Salisbury will put their unblemished CAC records to the test on Wednesday, October 8th as the Seahawks travel to the Eastern Shore to take on their first nationally-ranked opponent of 2014. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
Today's win marks just the third one that St. Mary's has tallied over Frostburg State in 15 meetings while snapping a three-game skid against the Bobcats. The Seahawks' last victory was a 2-0 decision at Seahawk Stadium in 2006.
Ranheim found the back of the net late in the first half for his first career goal. St. Mary's was awarded a corner kick which sophomore midfielder Yonah Zeitz (Potomac, Md./Edmund Burke School) took from the right side corner flag. Zeitz's kick found Ranheim's head for the 1-0 Seahawk lead at 36:42.
Frostburg (6-3-2, 1-1 CAC) had an opportunity to respond in the 42nd minute as first-year defender Brett Basham (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) rifled in a kick following a corner off the foot of junior forward Hendrick de Wit (Fort Howard, Md./Sparrows Point). First-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard with one of his four first-half saves.
In the second half, FSU outshot the Seahawks by a 9-7 margin but Haussler and the Seahawk defense withstood the challenge, making three saves and blocking two shots.
Haussler finished the afternoon with seven saves while sophomore Hassan Mostafa (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), this week's CAC Defensive Player of the Week, came up with two stops as Frostburg had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped.
