St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior captain Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) nabbed three gold medals in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team to a 121-84 Capital Athletic Conference win over Salisbury University Saturday afternoon.
Petersen started the final regular-season dual meet by swimming the second leg of the winning 400 medley relay (3:43.87). Joining him on the winning relay were juniors Dylan Cope (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) and Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and sophomore Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield).
Petersen then claimed the 200 individual medley in 2:03.39 while Witkop came in second (2:07.77). Petersen wrapped up the meet by pacing the Seahawks with a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.78.
First-year Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) had a solid meet for St. Mary's with a pair of gold medals in the distance events. Walchuck led sweeps in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle events. He won the 1000 free in 10:19.02 followed by senior Jon Sheldon (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) in second (10:47.43) and sophomore Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) in third (10:52.88).
Walchuck took first in the 500 free in 5:00.31 while Sheldon was second in 5:14.48 followed by Cope in third in 5:15.22.
Sophomore Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) also recorded two first-place finishes for the Seahawks. Burgess led a pair of 1-2 finishes in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly events. He claimed the 200 free in 1:50.05 followed by senior captain Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md./Atholton) in second (1:53.71).
Burgess then touched the wall first in the 200 fly in 2:02.02 while Karimi placed second in 2:08.53. Speer tallied the team's highest finish in the 100 freestyle with a second-place finish in 50.16. The foursome of Forest, Walchuck, Burgess and Speer picked up a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
Cope went third in the 50 freestyle in 22.77 while Forest registered a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.55. Sophomore Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown) finished fourth in both the 50 free and 200 back events.
St. Mary's won't be back in the pool until February 21-23 when the Seahawks host the CAC Men's and Women's Swimming Championships.
