Rowe's Walk-off Single Lifts St. Mary's Baseball

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall) stroked his first career walk-off single to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team to an 8-7 non-conference win over the Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) College Knights Sunday afternoon. With today's win, the Seahawks took two from MSMC in the three-game series.

After sophomore Logan Kurtz (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) sat down St. Mary's lead-off hitter of the ninth inning, Kurtz hit junior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) to put the game-winning run on base. Junior CF Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Green to second, setting up Rowe's game-winning two-out single to left field.

Rowe and junior DH Brandon Eady (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) paced the Seahawks at the plate with two hits apiece while senior 3B Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) drove in two scores. Senior closer Sam Coe (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) picked up the win on the mound as Coe notched the final two outs of the ninth inning, limiting the Knights' rally to three runs and a 7-7 tie.

At the plate for Mount Saint Mary, first-year Steve Notaro (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led the way with a 3-for-5 effort and four RBI while senior Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) added two hits, two runs and two RBI. Kurtz took the loss after 1.2 innings pitched with one run on two hits.

The Knights owned a 2-1 advantage after the first inning as Carminati connected on an RBI triple and then scored on a ground out. MSMC added two more runs in the third for a 4-1 lead following consecutive RBI singles by Notaro and sophomore Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North).

Down three runs, St. Mary's responded in a big way in the fifth with six runs on four hits and two errors. Green and Lenovitz combined to drive in three runs with a pair of singles, helping the Seahawks to a 7-4 advantage.

MSMC rallied in the ninth as the Knights tacked on three additional runs on one hit and one error to knot the game at 7-7. One run was walked in while Notaro hit a single up the middle to score sophomore Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph of the Sea) and junior Ryan Atkins (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill).

St. Mary's will be back in action on Thursday, February 27th as the Seahawks host Randolph-Macon College in a non-conference game at 2:00 p.m.
