St. Mary's Baseball Takes One in Doubleheader with Bethany (W.Va.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Pierce, Fla. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split Tuesday's doubleheader with Bethany (W.Va.) College, falling 4-1 in the first game before claiming a 5-0 shutout win in the nightcap. First-year Reid D'Antuono (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) pitched the complete shutout win in the second game for his first career win.

St. Mary's (10-9) struck first in the first game for a 1-0 lead in its half of the first inning as senior Eric Skrzyniarz (Bethesda, Md./Churchill) came home on a two-out, RBI single by junior Matt Holdefer (Bad Kreuznach, Germany/Wilde Lake [Md.]). Bethany responded with two in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

The Bison (4-3) stretched their lead to 3-1 in the third on an RBI single by junior Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio) before taking a three-run advantage in the fifth with their fourth and final run as senior Juls Leto (McKees Rocks, Pa.) came home on senior Dominic Controguerra's (Richmond, Ohio) sacrifice fly.

Senior Zak Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) sat down the Seahawk lineup in order in the seventh inning to seal his second win of the season. First-year Jimmy Robey (Kensington, Md./Gonzaga) took the loss on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks.

D'Antuono scattered six hits in his complete game shutout win in the nightcap, picking up a season-best two strikeouts. First-year Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall), junior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha), and Holdefer each collected two hits to pace the Seahawks in the win.

The Seahawks had a big second inning, scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Brandon Eady (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) led off the inning with a triple to right field before scoring on a Bethany throwing error. Senior Kenny Beyer (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) then came home on Green's RBI single to right field.

Green made it a 3-0 SMCM lead after crossing home plate on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun). The final run scored on a sac fly by junior Brad Dioguardo (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin). Bethany pitched another fly out to get out of the inning.

Green then got the offense going in the fifth with a lead-off single to left field, advancing to second on a Holdefer sac bunt, and then scoring on an RBI single to right by Rowe. The Bison notched a pair of ground outs to limit the damage.

St. Mary's will be back at it tomorrow morning as the Seahawks square off against Centenary (N.J.) College in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 10:00 a.m.
