Beatty's Record-Setting Day Leads St. Mary's Baseball to Sweep of Marymount (Va.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Arlington, Va. – Inspired by MLB's Opening Day, senior captain Sam Beatty (Columbia, Md./Hammond) fanned 16 batters to set a Capital Athletic Conference single-game record as the St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team posted a sweep of Marymount (Va.) University, 4-3 and 9-6, on Monday afternoon.

Beatty not only set a conference single-game mark but also tied the school's single-game record set in 1991 by Bill Davis against Washington Bible College. The 6-2 right-handed pitcher broke the CAC mark of 15 set by Jeff Hootselle of University of Mary Washington in 1997. He improves to 5-2 on the season as Beatty hurled his second complete game of the season for the 4-3 win in the first game. He gave up three runs (none earned) on five hits and no walks.

The Seahawks (14-14, 5-5 CAC) rallied in the top of the ninth with two runs to erase Marymount's 3-2 hold. After a lead-off pop up to first, junior captain Luke Green (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) doubled to left before junior DH Matt Holdefer (Bad Kreuznach, Germany/Wilde Lake [Md.]) reached on an error and Green went to third to have the tying and go-ahead runs on board.

Sophomore C Connor Goodie (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) stepped up to deliver a single through the left side to score Green and move first-year pinch runner Anthony Cangelosi (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) to third, knotting the game at 3-3 with one out. After three defensive changes by the Saints (4-21, 0-11 CAC), junior CF Paul Roemer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.

First-year 2B Zach Rowe (Annapolis, Md./Calvert Hall) laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Cangelosi for the go-ahead run. First-year RHP Ben Berczek (Chesapeake, Va.) finally got Marymount out of the inning with a strikeout. Beatty then went to work in the Saints' half of the ninth as he retired the side in order, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Goodie finished the first game with two hits and two RBIs as the Seahawks owned a 2-0 lead before Marymount responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and one error.

It was another tight one in the nightcap as St. Mary's once again needed a rally for the win after falling behind 5-2 in the fourth. The Seahawks cut the lead to 5-3 with a single run in the fifth before exploding for a five-run seventh inning to reclaim the lead at 8-5. Marymount, a first-year program, got one back in its half of the seventh.

The Seahawks' ninth and final run came in the top of the ninth as junior Jared Eaker (Mechanicsville, Md./Leonardtown) knocked one out of the park for his first homer as a Seahawk to lead off the inning.

Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) picked up his fourth win of the season with 6.0 innings of work while junior Patrick Watson (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) earned his first career save, holding the Saints to just one run on five hits over the final 3.0 innings of the game. Senior Alex Lenovitz (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) paced St. Mary's at the plate in the second game with a 3-for-5 effort, adding two runs and an RBI.

The Seahawks will now travel to the Eastern Shore on Wednesday, April 2nd to take on No. 18 Salisbury University in another CAC matchup at 3:30 p.m. In their first meeting of the season on March 11th, St. Mary's posted a 3-1 win over then No. 7 Salisbury behind Beatty's complete game performance.
