Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team matched their largest scoring output of the season with a 3-0 non-conference win over the visiting Methodist University Monarchs Saturday afternoon. First-year midfielder Beth Walton (Fallston, Md./Fallston) paced the Seahawk offense with a goal and an assist.
St. Mary's (3-2-1) improves its series record against Methodist, 4-1, including an undefeated 3-0 record at Seahawk Stadium. The Monarchs' only win came last season by way of a 2-1 double overtime score.
Sophomore midfielder Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) struck first for the Seahawks at 2:37. Junior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) sent in a cross from the right and first-year Christy Ims (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) deflected it towards goal where Kostelnik was waiting for the finish.
The 1-0 Seahawk lead held throughout the remainder of the first half as both sides finished with three shots. One of Methodist's attempts hit the crossbar while first-year goalkeeper Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) denied another.
St. Mary's scored early on to begin the second stanza as junior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) picked up a slanted through ball from Walton and dribbled in before firing one past junior keeper Taylor Ross (Elon, N.C./Western Alamance) at 48:07.
For the third and final score of the game, junior Teresa Paz (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) ran down a loose ball as it reached the end line and played it back in front of the goal where Walton put a shot into the far left corner.
Methodist (0-4) is left searching for its first win of 2014 despite posting advantages in both shots (11-8) and corner kicks (5-3). The Monarchs edged St. Mary's, 8-5, in second-half shot but found it difficult to get one past Larkin.
Larkin finished the game with seven saves for her second shutout of the season while Ross made one stop in Methodist's third shutout loss.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 17th as St. Mary's travels to Baltimore to face No. 18 Johns Hopkins University (4-2) under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
