Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The second half of today's men's soccer matchup between St. Mary's College of Maryland and The Catholic University of America was a high scoring affair with a combined five goals. St. Mary's battled back to knot it a 2-2 but Catholic notched the game-winner in the 79th minute for the 3-2 non-conference victory.
Today's loss extends St. Mary's (4-3) winless streak against the Cardinals to seven straight, dating back to 2008. The Seahawks' last triumph was a 3-0 decision in 2005, capping a nine-game win streak over Catholic. In 2006, the two squads played to a 1-1 draw.
Following a scoreless first half, Catholic (2-4) struck first as sophomore midfielder Sean Adams (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) put in a loose ball during a scramble in front of the goal for a 1-0 Cardinal lead at 50:41.
Adams had a hand in Catholic's second score as he knocked down a Seahawk defensive clear and sent the ball back towards the goal where senior midfielder Ben Fleri (College Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) found the back of the net for his first goal of the season at 57:37.
Sophomore forward Zach Fontenot's (Middletown, Md./Middletown) third tally of the year at 62:32 cut St. Mary's deficit in half. Fontenot stole the ball from the Cardinal defense in the Seahawks' offensive third of the field, dribbled past two defenders, and the fired into the lower left corner.
Junior defender Alexander Driessen (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) picked up his first collegiate goal at 72:54 to tie the game up. First-year forward Emmanuel Kanneh (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) sent in the corner kick from the right side of the field and Driessen drove in a low kick just to the right of senior goalkeeper Torsten Meuschke (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder).
Nearly two minutes after subbing in for Fleri, junior midfielder Alex Laprade (Lincoln, R.I./LaSalle) shot the ball just inside the far post after receiving a short pass inside the box from fellow classmate Tyler Zimmerman (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) for the eventual game-winning goal at 78:42.
Shots were even at 11 apiece while Catholic owned a 5-3 corner kick margin. Two of St. Mary's corner kicks came in the final eight minutes of the game.
First-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) finished with two saves in the Seahawks' second consecutive loss while Meuschke came up with two stops as Catholic snapped a three-game skid.
St. Mary's will wrap up its five-game home-stand next Tuesday, September 23rd as the Seahawks welcome Randolph-Macon College (1-4) to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 4:00 p.m.
