Two Early Goals Fly St. Mary's Men's Soccer Past Washington College

Box Score

Chestertown, Md. – Two first-half goals helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team post a 2-0 non-conference win over Washington College Wednesday afternoon.

In their first meeting since 1996, the Seahawks picked up only their third win over the Washington Shoremen and the first since 1992 in the two teams' 12-game history.

Washington (1-1) edged St. Mary's, 15-12, in shots for the game but first-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) came up big for the Seahawks, making five saves in his first career start.

The St. Mary's (2-1) offense supported the defensive efforts of Haussler and the backline with a pair of first-half goals.

First-year forward Alessandro Burlew (Mt. Airy, Md./Good Counsel) notched his second tally of the season at 29:09 for the eventual game-winner off a pass from Braun. Burlew blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the lower left corner.

The Seahawks headed into intermission with a two-goal advantage as sophomore midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) netted his first of the year at 40:43. After receiving a feed from junior defender James Pollock (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills), Tait dribbled down the right side, faked, and fired a shot that bounced off the left post and in.

In the second half, St. Mary's relied on its defense to preserve its 2-0 lead as the Shoremen were awarded seven corner kicks. Strong defensive pressure on the Washington corner kicks forced the hosts into four wide shots and one that was denied by Haussler.

Washington dominated corner kicks by a 13-3 margin while sophomore David Myers (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and junior Jon Wendeborn (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) split time in goal. Myers gave up both goals and Wendeborn held the Seahawks scoreless with two saves in the second stanza.

St. Mary's will be back in action this weekend, September 6-7, as the Seahawks welcome Baldwin Wallace College, Bridgewater (Va.) College, and Salisbury University to Seahawk Stadium for the annual Seahawk Classic. St. Mary's faces Bridgewater first on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. before taking on Baldwin Wallace the next day at 3:00 p.m.
