Box Score Towson, Md. – It was another heartbreaking loss for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team Tuesday night as the Seahawks succumbed to a 2-1 non-conference loss late in the second half to Goucher College.
With than a minute remaining in regulation, senior midfielder Lashaw Salta (Allen, Texas/Plano East) picked up a failed Seahawk clear and drilled it past first-year goalkeeper Ben Meyers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) into the top corner at 89:13 for the eventual game-winner.
St. Mary's (5-5) maintained its offensive pressure, taking back-to-back shots in the final four seconds of the contest but the Gopher defense was ready and blocked both attempts. The Seahawks finished with the edge in shots, 13-12, while Goucher owned a 4-1 margin in corner kicks, including three in the second half.
Goucher (5-4) claimed an early 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes in as sophomore defender Jeremy Hardy (Brooklyn, N.Y./Beacon) beat first-year goalkeeper Zack Haussler (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) one-on-one after receiving a lead pass from junior forward Marco Gotti (Milmay, N.J./Millville).
The two sides headed into halftime deadlocked at 1-1 following an unassisted goal by first-year forward Emmanuel Kanneh (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) at 35:20. Kanneh fired a laser into the top left corner from the left side.
Haussler started the game and posted one save in 82 minutes while Meyers was saddled with the loss in the final eight minutes. Sophomore Nicholas Stolarz (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) recorded two stops as Goucher notched just its third win over the Seahawks in their 23rd meeting. St. Mary's holds an 18-3-2 advantage in the series history following tonight's action.
St. Mary's returns to Capital Athletic Conference action this Saturday, October 4th as the Seahawks welcome Frostburg State University to Seahawk Stadium for Hawktoberfest. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
