Box Score Reading, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team needed only two shots to post a come-from-behind 2-1 win over regionally-ranked Bridgewater (Va.) College and claim the Crusader Cup Tournament title Sunday evening.
Host Alvernia University (2-3) was victorious in the consolation game following a 3-2 defeat of Penn State Altoona (0-4).
Senior captain Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) earned Tournament MVP honors while senior captain Caryn Thompson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), sophomore midfielder Claire Kostelnik (Los Angeles, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy), and first-year Christy Ims (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Bridgewater (3-1), who is ranked seventh in the South Atlantic region, entered tonight's action undefeated. The Eagles dominated the tempo and flow of the game, tallying a 15-2 shot advantage and a 7-4 margin in corner kicks.
BC struck first as senior midfielder Anna Thiesen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) collected a through ball from fellow midfielder Michelle Viegas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and found the back of the net at 31:15 for the early 1-0 Eagle lead.
The Bridgewater defense kept St. Mary's (2-2) without a shot in the first half and the Eagles carried the one-goal advantage into intermission. BC owned a 7-0 margin in shots as well as a 3-0 edge in corner kicks following first half play.
Ims scored the equalizer on the team's first shot of the night just 1:14 into the start of the second half off a corner kick as Thompson assisted on the play.
St. Mary's second and final shot came off the foot of McCarty as the Seahawks capitalized on another corner kick opportunity. Senior Liz Mosher (Bethesda, Md./Madeira) played the ball in and McCarty put it away for her second straight game-winner.
First-year goalkeeper Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) notched a season-best eight saves in improving to 1-1 on the season.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 10th as St. Mary's hosts The Catholic University of America in Seahawk Stadium at 4:00 p.m. Catholic (4-0) is ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic region.
