St. Mary's Men's Soccer Puts up Good Fight but fall to Marymount (Va.)

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team took a lead against Marymount (Va.) University early in the game but was unable to upend the Marymount Saints, falling 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Saints' first-year midfielder Mynor Lopez (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) had the first goal of the game in the 15th minute as Lopez shot right outside of the 18-yard box with a low strike that deflected off of sophomore goalkeeper Zack Haussler's (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) glove.

St. Mary's (6-5-1, 2-2-0 CAC) played with intensity early in the game with six shots being fired in the opening 13 minutes of the game. The Seahawks evened up the score in the 28th minute as junior midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./ Sandy Spring Friends School) capitalized on a deflection off of senior goalkeeper Logan Cropper (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) after Cropper saved Tait's penalty kick attempt.

Tait put the Seahawks on top 2-1 before halftime as he fired in his 11th goal of the season at 34:31.

Marymount (5-7, 1-3 CAC) was looking to tie it up in the second half and found its opportunity in the 63rd minute. Junior forward Ahmed El-manialawy (Cairo, Egypt/Wakefield [Va.]) directed a header towards first-year midfielder Chris Cardenas (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) who then fed fellow classmate, Andre Ferguson (Ft. Washington, Md./Crossland), and Ferguson beat Haussler one-on-one with a low shot.

A free kick gave the Saints the eventual game-winning goal as Ferguson sent in a cross from the right side and first-year defender Rodney Ngoh (Ft. Washington, Md./Crossland) headed the ball into the left side of the goal at 76:29.

However, the Seahawks fought to the end and made Cropper and Marymount earn their first conference win of the season. First-year midfielder Juwan Kearson (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) put Cropper to the test with a header at 80:56 and another legitimate shot with just one second remaining that had an opportunity to send the game into OT.

The Seahawks had a total of seven corner kicks to Marymount's one while St. Mary's outshot the Saints, 34-9.

St. Mary's will be back in action when they take on No. 10 Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, October 14 at 1:30 p.m.
