Box Score Frostburg, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team played in their fourth consecutive one-goal match Saturday evening, taking an early lead only to fall 2-1 in double overtime at Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The loss drops St. Mary's (6-7-1, 2-4-0 CAC) to seventh in the conference standings with six points while Frostburg State (9-4-1, 3-2-1 CAC) moves to fifth with 10 points.
For the second game in a row, the Seahawks staked an early lead in the contest. Junior midfielder Nick Tait (Silver Spring, Md./Sandy Spring Friends School) picked up his 13th goal of the season with an unassisted score at 4:32.
The two sides headed into halftime in a 1-1 draw as first-year forward Guy Nabo (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mills) finished off a pass from junior forward Jonathan Lippitt (Columbia, Md./Hammond) for the equalizer nine seconds before the end of the first half.
Both teams attacked the goal hard in the second stanza with St. Mary's edging the Bobcats, 8-7, in shots but neither side could break through solid defensive efforts. Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Meyers (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) made four saves in the half while junior Hassan Mostafa (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) turned away six scoring opportunities by the Seahawks.
Frostburg outshot St. Mary's, 3-1, in the first overtime period but unsuccessful in putting any on frame. The Bobcats were more efficient in the second extra period, needing only two shots to notch their third CAC win of the season.
Junior midfielder Elliot Quinteros (Jessup, Md./Hammond) fired in a shot which was denied by a Seahawk defender before first-year midfielder Kelvin Tata (Joppa, Md./C. Milton Wright) put back the rebound for the game-winning goal with 4:18 remaining in OT.
FSU tallied an 18-15 edge in shots while St. Mary's posted an 8-5 margin in corner kicks. Meyers finished with five saves in the Seahawks' fourth straight loss while Mostafa grabbed eight stops for Frostburg.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, October 21 when the Seahawks welcome the University of Mary Washington (10-5, 3-3 CAC) to Seahawk Stadium on Senior Day for a key conference match at 3:30 p.m. Prior to the game, the team's four seniors – Will Alberding (Bowie, Md./DeMatha), Chris Harwick (Hanover, N.H./Hanover), Davis Holland (Pelletier, N.C./Leonardtown [Md.]), and James Pollock (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) – will be recognized for their contributions to the Seahawk men's soccer program.
