Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Caroline Rivera (Stuttgart, Germany/Patch American) netted the equalizer and senior forward Jess Konecke (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) tallied the game-winning goal to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon. St. Mary's posted a 2-1 overtime Capital Athletic Conference win over Frostburg State University on Senior Day.
Konecke picked up a cross from the right side from senior forward Gillian Sawyer (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and dribbled a few steps to her left past a Frostburg State defender before unleashing a left-footed shot. Her shot hit the far post and ricocheted in for 'golden goal' with 4:48 remaining in the extra period. This is Konecke's sixth career game-winning goal.
St. Mary's (7-6, 5-1 CAC) remains tied for first in the conference standings with Christopher Newport University (10-3-1, 5-1-0 CAC) as each team boasts 15 points after their Saturday wins.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Larkin (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) recorded seven saves to improve to 4-2 on the season while senior Paige Gray (Port Republic, Md./Calverton) notched four stops as Frostburg's six-match unbeaten streak came to an end.
The Bobcats (8-6-2, 4-1-1 CAC) dominated the first half with a 9-3 shot advantage but struggled to put many on frame and those on frame were easily handled by Larkin. Larkin and Gray did well in protecting their respective houses in sending their teams into intermission in a scoreless draw.
FSU finally ended the stalemate at 51:05 when sophomore midfielder Melanie Bell's (Sykesville, Md./Century) shot from about 20 yards out just curved inside the far post for a 1-0 Bobcat lead. Rivera's first career goal at 86:18 was crucial for the Seahawks in forcing overtime. Gray broke up a corner kick but did not grab the rebound which fell at Rivera's feet for the equalizer.
Frostburg finished with an 18-11 advantage in shots while St. Mary's owned a 5-3 margin in corners.
The Seahawks will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday, October 21 when they travel to Dover, Delaware to take on Wesley College (5-7-2, 2-4-0 CAC) under the lights in a CAC matchup at 7:00 p.m.
